Heading into the Sinai desert is one of the highlights of a Sharm El Sheikh holiday. A little preparation about what to wear makes the day far more comfortable, so you can enjoy the views instead of worrying about dust and sun.
Choose light, breathable clothing
Daytime in the desert is hot and dry for much of the year. Loose cotton or other breathable fabrics help you stay cool, and covering your shoulders and legs also protects your skin from the sun and from flying dust. Light colours are usually more comfortable than dark ones.
Wear closed shoes
Sand, small stones and uneven ground are part of the experience. Closed shoes such as trainers protect your feet far better than flip-flops or sandals, and they stay on securely when you climb in and out of vehicles or walk over rocky ground.
Protect yourself from sun and dust
- Sunglasses to protect your eyes from glare and fine sand
- A hat or cap for the middle of the day
- Sunscreen applied before you leave your hotel
- A scarf or shemagh you can wrap over your nose and mouth if it gets dusty
Bring a light layer for the evening
Temperatures can drop noticeably after sunset in the desert, even when the day was warm. If your trip runs into the evening, a light jacket or sweater is a good idea.
What else to pack
Bring a bottle of water, a small amount of cash for tips or souvenirs, and a phone or camera with enough battery for photos. Keep valuables to a minimum, because sand gets everywhere.
